EN/ The Feutrophone is a multiplayer music instrument made of felt. Designed in collaboration with the Beaux-Arts of Brussels in Textile design, the textile was thought of as a material of action through meshing and weaving.
These methods create nuances between soft contacts as «skimming», and strong ones as «hitting». These manipulations are translated to sound and grant interactivity to the object.
Made conductive by humidity, the felt becomes a musical instrument. Each sound was conceived in function of felt’s shape. The Feutrophone arrays a large keyboard of 7 textile phases, providing a tactile experience to the onlookers. A 1.8-meter large frame reachable by hand plays with transparency: the mechanism is visible by turning around the object.
The Feutrophone reveals itself to the players, where each will develop a unique gesture to produce their own music.

FR/ Le Feutrophone est un instrument de musique en feutre, qui s’offre à la manipulation de plusieurs joueurs et/ou musiciens. Réalisé en collaboration avec les Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles en Design Textile, le projet est celui d’un textile comme matériau de contact et d’action à travers maillages et tissages.
Ces derniers créeront des nuances entre les contacts doux où l’on vient « effleurer », et forts comme un « coup ». Ces manipulations sont simulées par du son et offrent un champ interactif à l’objet.
En effet, rendu conductible par l’humi- dité, le feutre devient un instrument de musique. Chaque son étant pensé par le traitement associé. Le Feutrophone se déploie en un large clavier de sept phases textiles, s’offrant à l’expérimen- tation tactile de plusieurs curieux. Il s’étend sur un cadre incliné de 1,80m, à hauteur et portée de main. Jouant la transparence, l’ensemble de la mécanique est visible en tournant autour de l’objet.
Le Feutrophone dévoile son intérêt par un accès aux visiteurs, car chacun développera une gestuelle afin de pro- duire sa propre musique.
